China Opens 152 New Air Cargo Routes – A Golden Opportunity to Strengthen Vietnam’s Supply Chain Connectivity
In the first eight months of 2025, China recorded a remarkable leap in the air cargo sector with the launch of 152 new international freight routes, raising the total number of connections to more than 60 countries. With an additional frequency of over 300 round-trip flights per week—1.5 times higher than the same period last year—China continues to affirm its position as a global logistics hub while creating new growth momentum for regional supply chains, including Vietnam.

Driven by e-commerce and high-tech industries
According to statistics, in the first half of 2025, China transported more than 2 million tons of international cargo, accounting for 44% of the global market share. The boom in cross-border e-commerce, coupled with the expansion of high-tech manufacturing sectors, has been the key driver fueling the sharp rise in demand for air logistics.
Extensive network across Asia–Europe, reaching Africa and South America
By the end of August 2025, China’s cargo network had expanded to over 60 countries, linking manufacturing hubs with major global markets, including:
- North America: 14 new routes, reflecting the recovery of U.S.–China trade.
- Africa: additional routes to West Africa, supporting electronics exports and agricultural/mineral imports.
- South America & Oceania: while accounting for a smaller share, these routes open up strategic access to emerging markets.

Key Cargo Routes

- Wuhu – Moscow (operated by Siberia Airlines, 2 flights per week): specializing in transporting electronics and machinery, positioning Wuhu as a new logistics hub in East China.
- Zhengzhou – Budapest (operated by Hungary Airlines, 5 flights per week with A330-200F): strengthening the China–Europe supply chain for electronics and automotive industries.
- West Africa Routes: exporting components from China while importing agricultural products and minerals from Nigeria and Ghana.
Southeast Asia and Vietnam – The New Focus

Notably, Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, is emerging as a strategic region.
- In early 2025, Tianjin Cargo launched the Shenzhen – Ho Chi Minh City route (4 flights per week), cutting transport time to under one day.
- JD Logistics operates the Wuhu – Hanoi route (2–3 flights per week), carrying apparel, machinery, minerals, and agricultural products.
- Currently, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are running about 40 cargo flights per week between the two countries.
Experts predict that the number of China–Vietnam cargo routes will continue to grow, with potential new services such as Guangzhou – Hanoi and Shanghai – Da Nang.

Strategy for Building an “Air Super-Network”
According to Mr. Tong Zhidong – Director General of CAAC, air logistics will become a pillar of the modern industrial system, helping to maintain the smooth circulation of global trade. By 2025, China aims to operate a fleet of around 300 aircraft, with 20 hub cities contributing over 80% of total cargo throughput.
Opportunities for Vietnamese Businesses

The rapid expansion of China’s air cargo network presents both opportunities and challenges:
- Opportunities: Vietnam can leverage its geographic proximity to integrate more deeply into supply chains for electronics, textiles, and agricultural products.
- Challenges: Vietnamese enterprises must strengthen competitiveness, optimize logistics costs, and proactively build connections with airlines and transport partners to avoid being overshadowed in the region.
As a key regional manufacturing and export hub, Vietnam stands to gain significantly from the wave of the “air logistics super-network” that China is developing.
