Air Freight Rates Rebound Globally: A Sign of Recovery Amid a Quiet Summer Season

Amid what is typically considered the low season for the global air logistics industry, air freight rates have unexpectedly surged worldwide during the second week of July 2025. This development not only reflects a shift in supply and demand but also signals positive momentum for the supply chain—especially as the world continues to grapple with uncertainties from trade tensions and tariff policies.

Global BAI Index Rises 3.4% – Freight Rates Increase Across Major Hubs

According to the TAC Index – the organization tracking and publishing global air freight rates – the Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) rose by 3.4% during the week ending July 14, 2025. Notably, this increase was recorded across all major transportation hubs including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, London, and Chicago.

Although summer is typically a quieter period for air cargo demand, the current BAI00 is only 3.1% lower than the same period in 2024 – a relatively narrow gap compared to the steep declines seen in previous years.

Air Freight Rate Overview Across Key Markets

1. Asia

Asia remains the world’s largest production and export hub.

  • Hong Kong (BAI30): Spot and contract rates rose slightly by 1.8% WoW, narrowing the YoY decline to 6.7%.
  • Shanghai (BAI80): Saw a stronger increase of 4.1% WoW, bringing rates to only 3.0% below the same period last year.
  • Vietnam: Rates remained stable for shipments to Europe, but saw a slight drop on routes to the U.S.
  • India: Rates increased for both U.S. and European-bound exports, reflecting stronger purchasing demand from Western partners.

2. Europe

Europe is currently leading the upward pricing trend.

  • Frankfurt (BAI20): Rates increased 1.5% WoW, mainly on U.S.-bound routes, but are still 2.4% lower YoY.
  • London (BAI40): Rates surged 11.4% WoW, driven by strong transatlantic demand. The index now sits 24.1% higher YoY — a notable growth that signals the UK is regaining momentum in the global supply chain.

3. United States

Thanks to recent tariff policies, the U.S. is gradually regaining competitiveness.

  • Chicago (BAI50): Outbound rates to Europe, China, and South America rose 2.1% WoW, though still 7.3% lower than the same period last year. This reflects a slow but steady recovery in the U.S. market.

4. Trend Analysis: What’s Driving the Rate Hikes?

  • Low inventory at transit hubs: Following a weak H1 driven by sluggish consumer demand, retailers and manufacturers are now actively restocking – fueling a rebound in transport demand.
  • Tariff preemptive behavior: Concerns over potential new U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports are pushing companies to ship earlier than usual.
  • Increased demand for tech & healthcare goods: High-value goods like electronics and pharmaceuticals, which require rapid delivery, are leveraging air freight.
  • Localized capacity disruptions: Some airlines have reduced frequency during the low season, causing a supply-demand mismatch and pushing rates upward.

What Should Businesses Do Amid Freight Rate Fluctuations?

Although the current rate increases are not yet extreme, businesses with cross-border supply chains should proactively prepare contingency plans—especially for high-value and time-sensitive shipments. Relying solely on spot (short-term) transactions may lead to unexpected cost surges.
