Distinguishing Between MAWB and HAWB in Air Freight: What Businesses Need to Know
In the field of air freight, the airway bill (AWB) is one of the most critical documents to ensure the smooth, transparent, and secure flow of goods according to schedule. Among these, the MAWB (Master Air Waybill) and HAWB (House Air Waybill) are two types commonly used in parallel by businesses, exporters/importers, and logistics companies. However, many companies still confuse the two or lack a clear understanding of their distinct nature and roles.

2. What is MAWB?

MAWB (Master Air Waybill) is the master airway bill issued by the airline to the forwarder or direct shipper.
Key Features of MAWB:
- Records the entire consolidated shipment booked by the forwarder with the airline.
- Has a unique air waybill number: 3-digit airline prefix + 8-digit serial number (e.g., 123-45678901).
- Contains full details of the flight, total weight, and representative shipper/consignee information.
Role of MAWB:
- Serves as the official contract of carriage with the airline.
- Acts as the basis for the manifest and for tracking the shipment on the airline’s system.
- Used in preparing reports and documents related to air cargo operations.
Example: When a forwarder consolidates multiple small shipments and books space on a single flight, the total cargo is represented under one MAWB.
3.What is HAWB?

HAWB (House Air Waybill) is the house airway bill issued by the forwarder or consolidator to the individual shipper for their specific shipment within a consolidated load.
Key Features of HAWB:
- Details the shipment information of each individual customer within the larger consolidated load.
- Includes shipper and consignee details, number of packages, weight, and specific cargo description.
- HAWB does not appear in the airline’s system; it is managed internally by the forwarder.
Role of HAWB:
- Enables the forwarder to manage and separate the interests of each shipper in the consolidated shipment.
- Serves as an essential document for customs declaration and import/export procedures.
- Ensures transparency and accountability throughout the transportation process.
Example: Your company sends one pallet of cargo. The forwarder issues a HAWB for your use in customs clearance, while your pallet, along with others, is consolidated under a single MAWB.
4. What’s the Difference Between MAWB and HAWB?

Understanding this distinction helps businesses minimize documentation errors, avoid unnecessary costs, and optimize collaboration with international partners.
5. Key Considerations When Handling MAWB and HAWB:
- Verify all details of the Shipper, Consignee, number of packages, and weight to avoid discrepancies.
- Ensure the MAWB is issued by a reputable airline, complete with the correct prefix code.
- Work with a professional and transparent Forwarder when obtaining the HAWB.
- Maintain a complete set of documentation files for easy reference upon arrival.
- Strictly follow safety regulations for special cargo (e.g., dangerous goods, human remains) if applicable.
