Long Thanh International Airport Set to Become a Cargo Transport “Hub”
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has recently proposed relocating all international cargo transport operations from Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) to Long Thanh International Airport (Dong Nai). This is not only a strategic adjustment in the national aviation master plan but also a move that opens new opportunities for the logistics industry, particularly for import-export businesses.

Modern Infrastructure – The Foundation for a New Air Cargo Logistics Hub
Long Thanh International Airport is planned to become a regional-scale aviation and logistics hub, featuring a cargo terminal system, freight handling warehouses, and a 257-hectare logistics zone located in the southwest. This infrastructure will accommodate wide-body, high-capacity aircraft such as the B747F and B777F, which are the standard for dedicated international cargo carriers.

Long Thanh Airport Races to Meet Completion Deadlines
In addition, Long Thanh is designed with fully integrated multimodal connections, including the Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway, the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau Expressway, major international seaports such as Cai Mep–Thi Vai and Phuoc An, and in the future, a high-speed railway line. These connections will significantly shorten transit times, reduce logistics costs, and facilitate cargo transshipment to major markets such as Europe, the Americas, and Northeast Asia.

Reducing Pressure on Tan Son Nhat – Optimizing Air Cargo Operations

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is under significant pressure from passenger and cargo volumes that far exceed its designed capacity.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport is currently under heavy pressure from passenger and cargo volumes far exceeding its designed capacity. Limited warehouse space, restricted apron areas, and frequent traffic congestion in surrounding areas have created significant challenges for cargo transport operations. Shifting international cargo activities to Long Thanh will allow Tan Son Nhat to focus on passenger services while improving the overall operational efficiency of the southern aviation network.
Leveraging the Global Supply Chain Shift
As global supply chains undergo major restructuring in the aftermath of the pandemic and amid ongoing geopolitical shifts, Vietnam is emerging as an attractive destination in the “China + 1” strategy of many multinational corporations. With its strategic location at the heart of Southeast Asia, Long Thanh has the potential to become the region’s new cargo transshipment hub, attracting leading players in logistics, cross-border e-commerce, and supporting services such as bonded warehousing, cold chain transportation, packaging, and inspection.
Opportunities for Export–Import and Logistics Enterprises
The centralization of international cargo operations at Long Thanh will offer significant advantages for export–import businesses:
- Faster delivery times: Multimodal connections help shorten transit times between factories and the airport, and vice versa.
- Lower logistics costs: Large-scale operations and modern infrastructure enable cost optimization in cargo handling.
- Access to specialized services: Dedicated cargo airlines can expand their operations, offering more route and service options.
- Enhanced international competitiveness: Goods can reach end markets faster and in optimal condition—especially for perishables, electronic components, and pharmaceuticals.
