Packaging Goods in Air Freight: Complying with IATA Standards to Optimize the Entire Journey

Packaging is the first step, yet it plays a decisive role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost optimization in air logistics. However, not all businesses are fully aware of the packaging regulations set by IATA (International Air Transport Association) – the standard adopted by airlines and airports worldwide.

1. Why Comply with IATA Packaging Standards?

In air freight, cargo goes through multiple stages of transshipment, loading and unloading, and experiences significant vibrations throughout the flight. Improper packaging poses serious risks:

  • Damage or breakage of goods
  • Rejection by warehouses or airlines
  • Additional charges or cargo being offloaded (bumped)
  • Delivery delays or disruption of the supply chain

Adhering to IATA standards not only ensures transportation safety but also helps businesses minimize losses and optimize logistics costs.

2. IATA Air Freight Packaging Requirements

Cargo must be clearly classified by type, with appropriate labeling and handling instructions for each category.

Below are key criteria for packaging air cargo in compliance with IATA standards:

1. Suitability for Cargo Type

  • Fragile Goods: Use foam inserts, rigid cartons, or wooden frames. Apply labels such as “Fragile” or “Handle with Care”.
  • Perishable Goods: Require insulated foam containers, dry ice or cold gel packs, and clear labeling of required storage temperatures.
  • Dangerous Goods (DGR): Must be packed in leak-proof, impact-resistant packaging in full compliance with IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, with proper hazard labels and documentation.
  • High-Value Goods (VAL): Must be sealed, discreetly packaged without visible indicators of contents, and typically accompanied by insurance and/or security escort.

2. Weight & Dimension Limits

Weight:

  • Manually handled packages: maximum 70kg
  • Machine-lifted pallets (ULD): up to 1,000–3,000kg depending on aircraft type

Dimensions:

  • Must fit within the aircraft cargo door
  • Example: Boeing 747 allows packages up to 300cm in length and 160cm in height (depending on position)

Oversized or overweight shipments may be rejected for transport and incur additional handling fees at the warehouse.

3. Pallets and Securing

Cargo pallets must be wrapped in PE film and fastened with specialized straps to minimize the risk of impact and shifting during the flight.

  • Pallets must be sturdy (made of hardwood or aluminum) and meet aviation standards
  • Goods must be stacked neatly, without overhang, and with evenly distributed weight
  • Use specialized cargo straps or full shrink wrapping – do not use rope or regular tape

3. Consequences of Improper Packaging

IATA – the global packaging standard for air cargo – is mandatory across international airlines and airports.

  • Cargo rejected by the airline → forced to delay to another flight or repack at warehouse
  • Additional handling fees incurred at the airport
  • Damaged goods → loss of reputation and time-consuming compensation claims
  • Disrupted supply chain → negative impact on production and business operations
