Vietnam’s Global Air Cargo Market Update: Mild Fluctuations but Stable Overall Ask ChatGPT

In the second week of July 2025, the global air cargo market continued to demonstrate stable pricing trends, despite a slight decline in cargo volumes for the second consecutive week. The latest report from WorldACD Market Data highlights several notable shifts in volume, freight rates, and regional recovery trends—particularly across key regions such as Asia-Pacific, North America, and the Middle East–South Asia.

Rates Hold Steady, Driven by North American Market Momentum

The global average spot rate in Week 28 edged up by 1%, reaching USD 2.46/kg—on par with the same period last year. However, when converted to euros (due to the USD weakening by approximately 6% year-over-year), the average rate reflects a 6% decline compared to 2024.

Air cargo market trends from June 9 to July 13, 2025

This modest price increase was primarily driven by a strong rebound in the North American market, where both volume and rates rose by 6% following the U.S. Independence Day holiday (July 4). This followed a sharp -11% drop in Week 27, highlighting clear seasonal patterns in this market.

  • Asia-Pacific: Exports to the U.S. Weaken, but Stable Toward Europe
  • The downward trend continued for air cargo from Asia-Pacific to the U.S., with volume falling -5% in Week 28 after a previous -2% dip. Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia (-23%), Thailand (-21%), Vietnam (-14%), and Singapore (-10%) were the most affected.
  • In contrast, a few bright spots emerged: Japan (+6%), Hong Kong (+3%), and South Korea (+1%) saw modest recoveries. However, spot rates from this region to the U.S. declined by -2%, with Japan facing a steep -20% drop.
  • Meanwhile, air freight from Asia-Pacific to Europe showed signs of stabilization and a slight recovery (+1%), led by South Korea (+7%) and Malaysia (+5%). Taiwan was the only major export hub in the region to record a decline for three consecutive weeks (-3%).

MESA Market: Geopolitical Pressures and New Customs Procedures

The Middle East and South Asia (MESA) region continues to face multiple challenges, including Eid-related disruptions, regional instability, attacks in the Red Sea, and recent changes to customs procedures in Bangladesh. In Week 28:

  • Chargeable weight declined by -3%
  • Average rates dropped by -3%, with spot rates down -4%
  • Year-over-year average price decreases: -12% (overall), -18% (spot rates)
  • Bangladesh saw a sharp decline, particularly for shipments to Asia-Pacific (-22%) and Europe (-8%). Meanwhile, exports to the U.S. rose by +4%, likely in anticipation of a new 35% tariff set to take effect on August 1.
  • India (-6%) and Sri Lanka (-5%) also experienced similar decreases in air cargo volume.
